Evening Primrose - Uses and Benefits

Herb Description

Evening primrose (Oenothera biennis), a small yellow wildflower, is a genus of about 125 species of biennial ,annual and herbaceous perennial flowering plants. It grows in temperate parts all over North America, Europe, and many other regions throughout the world, but it is most commonly matures and used in Canada and America. It is a member of Onagraceae family .Evening primrose can be reach up to 8 feet in height, and it has beautiful flowers. It blooms all throughout the summer, but each flower lasts only single day. It flowers as the sun sets and then shrivels in the sunlight, It generally open between 6 and 7 o'clock in the evening, hence the name of Evening Primrose.

Leaves are 1 inch or more wide, 3 - 5 inches long, pointed, with nearly entire margins and covered with small hairs. The root is fusiform ,biennial, and fibrous, yellowish on the outer side and white inside.The seeds of this plant are about 5 cm long , are crushed that contain oil which is rich in essential fatty acids and is touted among nutritionists for its curing actions & also used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals .These polyunsaturated fats are beneficial fats, unlike the saturated fats that contribute to heart symptoms .

Uses and Benefits

Evening primrose is used to treat symptoms of heart & circulatory disorders,Sjogren's syndrome, breast disorders, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, post-viral fatigue disease, asthma, diabetic neuropathy, eczema & some other skin disorders, zinc deficiency, high cholesterol, & cancer.

Evening primrose oil can also use to abate menstrual cramps, pre-menstrual syndrome, menopause, endometriosis & mood swings related to the menstrual cycle & It is generally prescribed to ebb breast tenderness & pain resulted by fibrocystic breasts.

Oil of Evening primrose is widely used to cure breast pain, hot flashes, premenstrual syndrome, eczema, and other skin problems to diabetic neuropathy, cancer, high blood cholesterol levels, and heart syndromes.

As an anti-inflammatory properties, evening primrose oil is also efficacious in curing flare-ups of irritable bowel problems, and scientific studies report that it may be useful in curing rheumatoid arthritis pain as well.

It has proved an efficacious treatment in dyspepsia, torpor of the liver, and in certain female problems, such as pelvic fullness.

Side Effects

In excess use it may cause indigestion, nausea, soft stools, or headache . If any of these side-effects persist or worsen, contact your doctor promptly.None of these are fatal, of course. But borage oil may have liver toxins.

Omega-6 supplements, including GLA and Evening primrose oil, should not be used in the same time if person have a seizure disorder because there have been reports of these supplements enhance seizures.

It has been reported to heighten the problems of temporal lobe epilepsy , which can generally be mistaken for schizophrenia .

It is recommended not to use Evening primrose oil if person have epilepsy or another seizure disorder;

Dosage

  • Skin rash:

The prescribed dose is 3 to 4 grams for adults. Use two times daily.

  • Mastalgia (breast pain):

The prescribed dose is 1.5 to 2 grams. Use two times daily.

  • PMS:

The prescribed dose is 1.5 grams.Use two times daily.

  • Arthritis:

The prescribed dose is 1.5 grams . Use two times daily.

Drug Interactions

Evening primrose oil may enhance the action of ceftazidime, an antibiotic in a class called as cephalosporins, against a numbers of bacterial infections.

Evening primrose oil may heighten the actions of anti-cancer treatments, such as tamoxifen, doxorubicin, cisplatin, carboplatin, idarubicin, mitoxantrone,vincristine, and vinblastine.
