Home Remedies for Curing Cold and Cough
Some of the Common Home Remedies for Curing Cold and Cough are:
Carrom Seeds - A tablespoon of carom seeds crushed and tied up in a muslin cloth can be used for inhalation to relieve congestion/blocked nose.
Ginger - Cut ginger into 2 half pieces and boil with a cup of water. Give 8-10 boils. Strain, sweeten with 1/ 2 teaspoon sugar and drink hot.
Massage with Ghee - Massage the child's chest with warm olive oil or warm ghee (add a pinch of salt for extra potency) for 1 to 2 minutes followed by a steam inhalation.
Chawayanprash - Regular dose of half a teaspoon of Chawayanprash, can also prevent cold and cough from occuring.
Lemon - Squeeze a lemon in a glass of warm water, sweeten it with a teaspoon of honey and drink it twice daily for at least 3 days. This may help in treating cold and coughs.
Turmeric Powder - Turmeric powder is very good for persons suffering from cold and cough. A spoon full of turmertic powder can be given to the child with a little warm water. This would surely help in getting away the cold and cough in a few days.
The chronic patients of this cold and cough have their hair going untimely white. To stop the process and cure it, take 300 gms. of tulsi leaves dried in shade, 50 gms of Dalchini, 100 gms Tejpat, 200 gms Saunff , 200 gms of small cardamom, Agiya 300 gms; Banfshaw 25 gms; red sandal 200 ml. and Brahmi herb 200 ml. grind all these ingredients and strain them through a cloth. Now take 10 gms. of this powder, boil it in 500 gms. water and when just a cup of this water remains, add sugar and milk and drink it twice a day like you have tea. All these problems will vanish in a couple of days.
Grapes - Grapes are one of the most effective home remedies for the treatment of a cough. Grapes tone up the lungs and act as an expectorant, relieving a simple cold and cough in a couple of days. A cup of grape juice mixed with a teaspoon of honey is advised for cough relief.
Turmeric Powder and Ajwain: The combination of fresh turmeric powder and ajwain (carom seeds) is another very good remedy for cold and coughs. Both of them should be mixed in a glass of warm milk and taken once or twice a daily is the most useful curative measure.
Miraculous massage: Warm up coconut oil. Gently massage the coconut oil over the child's chest for about 5 minutes. Repeat the same on the upper portion of the back. The massage should be given just before you put your child to sleep. Make sure fans and air conditioners are off for atleast 2 hours after this massage. This simple treatment will soothe the child and will keep the cough away and will also help in getting a good undisturbed sleep.
Ginger Juice and Honey - Take half a teaspoon of ginger juice with half a teaspoon of honey, three times a day. In winter, warm the mixture by mixing a teaspoon of warm water in it.
Rest and Relax - Extra rest enables you to put all your energy into getting well.
Sip Chicken Soup - A cup of hot chicken soup can help unclog your nasal passages. This is because of its aroma or its taste. Chicken soup appears to possess an additional substance for increasing the flow of nasal mucus thereby removing germs from your nose when you blow your nose.
Almonds - Almonds are useful for curing dry coughs. Take 6-7 almonds and soak them in water overnight. Remove the brown skin in the morning. Now ground these almounds well and form a fine paste. Now you may add 20gm of each of butter and sugar for taste. This paste should be taken in the morning and evening.
Vitamin C Rich Fruits: Vitamin C rich fruits such as orange, sweet lime, strawberries, lemon etc. are extremely effective in treating and keeping cold and cough away. The high vitamin C in these fruits improves body's immune system helping it to fight more efficiently against virus.
Snow Pears - Slice 2 snow pears into small pieces. Add 3 bowls of water and boil until the water has reduced to 2 bowls. Strain and discard the pears, and add 30 grams of rice to the liquid. Boil again until rice is cooked. Drink the soup.
Tangerines - To relieve coughs with a yellowish mucous discharge, steam 2 unpeeled tangerines with 30 grams rock sugar. Eat the tangerines at bedtime.
Onion Juice and Honey - 3-4 tsp onion juice with 3-4 tsp honey taken daily prevents cold.
Cardamoms - In cases of sore throat, a clove or two cardamoms or a few raisins can be chewed.Gargling with warm salty water two to three times a day is also beneficial.
Carom Seeds (Ajwain) - A tablespoon of carom seeds (ajwain) crushed and tied in a muslin cloth. Inhale whenever nose is blocked.
